Rockaway Fest 2018

The first year officially designing for the music festival. I had done a smattering of unofficial design work for this fest in past years, before it had solidified into the Rock Away Music Fest. First order of business was establishing our official logo. I took what I had previously used and with a few subtle but important tweaks, we landed on the below.
The main project for this first year - putting together a comprehensive program of every single musical act that was to take place across Rockaway Beach, over three days and in several venues. I created a tri-fold event program. In collaboration with fellow illustration artist, Masato Okano, I took inspiration from one of his original monster illustrations done for the founder of the music festival. I fleshed out the illustration into the larger theme you see below and recreated the style of his monster by drawing the sinewy connected outlines that would act as borders for each venue as well as repurposing the thicker pipe like tentacles separating different sections of information in the program. By also adding hand-drawn type in certain areas and incorporating the silhouetted crowd at the bottom, I was able to establish the music fest’s overall aesthetic of being very DIY, underground, punk. I also created illustrated maps for different sections of the peninsula that we would go on to use year after year.
